Hi guys,

I'm new here but some of you may know me already from CorvetteForum.com & my video series Corvette Video on Streetfire.net & YouTube.

It has been suggested that I bring my 79 C3 project over here for you guys to take a look at so I figure, why not, it’s got subscribers all over the world as it is, what’s a few more.

To catch up: Currently, I've just redone the brake system & trying to get the car to run good enough to drive it in the driveway a little & test the new brakes out.

In Video 27 you can hear it run for yourself.
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Co ... -Video-27-Carb_640853.htm

In Video 28 you can see where I’m at currently with the carb.
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Co ... ideo-28-A-look_641210.htm

Obviously its a little more complicated than just going to Auto Zone & saying I need one of "these" to fix it. I have a new (rebuilt) 400HP 350 circle track motor with a 72 Caddy Rochester Quadrajet carb (750?). The stock type manifold currently on the motor doesn’t seem to be compatible with the carb but I do have an Edelbrock Performer (2101?) manifold on the old motor I'm planning on putting on it if it will fit from the 2 decked blocks. Even still, there are issues of getting the choke to work & a divorced choke has been suggested.

Although it might appear at this point that I know what I'm talking about, I really don't. I'm mostly repeating what other Corvette guys have said. I wouldn’t know a divorced choke if it jumped up a bit me & only learned the difference between a primary & a secondary this week.

Needless to say I’m no master mechanic & I’m in waaaay over my head with this project but I don’t mind because with the help I get from the internet I have made a LOT of progress & one of these days I’ll actually be able to go for a drive. I am doing this for the experience so although I could just take it to a garage & get it fixed that’s not what I’m after. Call me hard headed but I want to fix it myself.

If you have some suggestions or just know something that you can point out to me, feel free to comment. If you’re over at CorvetteForum also haller & say hi.

Divorced choke uses exhaust heat.

It can't be any worse than an electric choke, which is essentially just a timer. (As soon as you turn the key on it puts current into to a bimetallic coil, and as that heats up, it opens the choke blades, but you can at least adjust it to serve most conditions just fine.)

I'm sure every type of carb/manifold adapter is available by now. I'm not familiar with that carb.

That carb is a good one... circa 1972... it's also an early emissions carb... I would consider something newer.

Hell, I would consider EFI, but that's just me.

If the crate motor came with a manifold, I'd run the carb they recommend.

I agree with you that you're missing parts. I don't know what type of choke that carb came with.

See if you can find it on here: http://www.carburetor.ca/carbs/tech/Rochester/Quadrajet-index.html

I don't mind manual chokes. They are still used on bikes, I have one.

Would this electric one fit? http://www.carburetor.ca/carbs/chokes/CC139.htm

How does the car start and idle when cold right now?

I had a manual choke on my '70 Challenger, it wasn't that hard to use, hardest part was running the cable.

The builder of the motor said he had a "bigger" carb on it when it was dynoed at 400HP. It was originally built for a circle track racer (square boxy thing that runs on a dirt track) & that because of rules it has a stock type manifold & that I should use my Edelbrock Proformer IF it will fit because both blocks have been decked.

I have no peroblem changing anything out to get it all to work, just not made of money to go throwing thousands at it at random. At this point I'm still in the figure out whats wrong & exploring my options for a solution mode.

Right now, it takes a good 20 tries of dumping gas in it & starting for 5 sec before it will start & idol as good as you see in the video. Any functional choke would have to help with that but beyond that, what I'm reallly after is just getting it to run, just good enough, to try the breaks out & it keeps dieing as soon as I put it in gear. Maybe a choke would help with that maybe not. I'm no mechanic so I have no idea.

Time has passed & after reading Qjet books & pretty much saying to my self "well i could spend a few thousand bucks on parts & tools & chance really messing up OR I could get this one on ebay for $315 & it'll perform better than the rare Buick Qjet people pay thousands for.

There are a few videos here to bring everything up to date.

#32

After watching 32, what's goin on with that passing gear cable? I never have found somebody to explain that.

upon watching those videos i believe i am now dumber. the whole time it was running i was like was is that noise? wasn't until the end i noticed you have no exhaust.. smacks head. and unless you have a really decent set of heads on that engine i doubt a run of the mill 350 with a 270h cam is going to be making 400hp. you give us nothing to go off of.. whats your timing set at? what your idle set at? does the advance work and is it actuating properly? is it hooked up? is it hooked up correctly? have you checked all your vac lines for leaks? have you checked your plugs at all?
